The neck portion of the spine is made up of seven vertebrae, counted as C1 through C7. This seven-vertebrae arrangement is constant in humans. The first two are specialized: C1 (atlas) supports the skull and allows nodding, while C2 (axis) provides the pivot for head rotation. The other cervical vertebrae are smaller and have distinct features, but the count stays seven. It’s helpful to note that the hyoid bone sits in the neck too, but it isn’t a cervical vertebra and isn’t counted among these seven. So, the cervical region has seven bones.
